2020 Reading Challenges

Ah yes, so here we are again, the beginning of another reading year, where the opportunities feel endless! The challenges seem doable! And you are READY.TO.CONQUER.THE.READING.WORLD. YES!

Guys, I failed so spectacularly at my reading goals last year. I got to January. I got to JANUARY! and I stopped updating this page. I didn't even make it to the end of the month before my goals went flying out of my condo window, and my reading habits went the way of the dodo. Sadly, I do this every year. I set out on these extravagant reading quests only to struggle to make it past the front door (the front door being...January). I chastise myself, and in chastising I crawl deeper and deeper into a slump. Granted, this year was really trying for me personally, so I'm definitely being too hard on myself, but reading is my escape, it's my balm. And why I keep failing to use it to keep me above water is beyond me.

So, this year I'm enlisting the help of a reliable word: discipline. It will be my north star, my guiding light, my beacon in an endless sea of "I just can't today" thoughts. It will be my word of the year, in my personal life, and most especially in my writing and reading life. For this reason, I am again setting out on a fairly ambitious quest, probably the most ambitious to date, but I'm done allowing room for straying. There will be NO MORE SLUMPING in this town! Okay, right, onwards...

This year I'll be participating in (4) major reading challenges, 2 of them involving prompts, 1 of them focusing on reading the books I already own, and the last one is the good ol' Goodreads challenge.

*I've listed the challenges below with a brief explanation and their related graphics, however, at the bottom of each challenge you will find a link to a separate post where I will be tracking each one in more detail.*

Read more about this year's challenges below, maybe some of you will join me!:

This year I challenged myself to read 100 books!

(PROGRESS: 35/100)

The Nerd Daily 2020 Reading Challenge is one that I attempted to complete last year and (of course) didn't complete a single book using one of the prompts. Not ONE single prompt was referenced, UGH! But I'm trying my hand at it again this year, and will be using it in collaboration with the Goodreads and "Beat Your Backlist" challenge (meaning that if a backlist title read fulfills one of these prompts, it will count as a read book for that prompt).

PROGRESS: (19/52)

This is my first year attempting this challenge, and to be honest, what first drew me in was the colourful prompt list (haha), but what what hooked me was the 'Advanced' section of prompts that involves books and the number "20" (for 2020)--such a fun idea! This challenge will be fulfilled separately from The Nerd Daily challenge, but in collaboration with the Goodreads and 'Beat Your Backlist' challenge (meaning, again, that if a backlist title read fulfills one of these prompts, it will count as a read book for that prompt).

PROGRESS: (10/40, 2/10)

Here are the rules for this challenge as per the original post:

The book must have been published in 2019 or earlier to count. It can be in any format (including an ARC/eARC) as long as the release date is 2019 or earlier (i.e. 2020 releases are not allowed).

You have to start and finish the book in 2020 to count it. Any books started in 2019 and finished in 2020 do not count. Any books started in 2020 and finished in 2021 also do not count. The challenge runs from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020(your local time)
This challenge is definitely the one I'm looking forward to the most. Alike the hoards of book collectors out there, I feverishly snatch up books on sale, books not on sale, books available for review and let's be honest ANY BOOK, ANYWHERE whether I have room for it on my shelves or not (and I 100% do NOT). Thus, it goes without saying that my backlist titles are a'plenty, and growing every week. I shouldn't need a challenge to encourage me to start reading them, but alas, here we are.

This challenge will be in collaboration with the Goodreads, The Nerd Daily, and the PopSugar reading challenges.

Books will be read in physical, ebook and audiobook formats (including arcs/ercs from 2019 and prior). There is no set number of books to complete to fulfill the challenge, but I have chosen 100 books to complete.

PROGRESS: (2/100)

  1. Ooh nice set of challenges! I'll have to do this Backlist one! I was just looking for one of these! Though it will definitely present a greater challenge for me in the new year since I'm still trying to find a job too and that definitely eats up reading time!

Comment love is always appreciated! =)
I will always try my best to comment back!
