Memories and magic recovered, Frey is restored to the throne. But as she works to regain control of the North, a small silver dagger nearly brings her end. She raises The Seven of her guard and proves her abilities in order to secure her position. But another attempt on her life, from what appears to be fey, reveals not all are pleased with her return. If she could only figure out the force behind the attacks, she might be able to relax enough to decide what to do about her other problem... Chevelle.

From the very first book, Frey, I was captured by the beautiful imagery Melissa provided for her character's surroundings-it all felt very Lord of the Ring's to me.

That feeling, and writing style, continued in this third installment as we got to see Frey at her best. Her evolution wasn't a smooth one, but I really enjoyed seeing her grow into her own-at her own pace; learning the hard way sometimes. I really grew to respect the decisions she made-even if some of them made me yell at loud at the book.

Frey's relationship with Chevelle was gradual, and I appreciated that-there was no insta-love here-something I think a lot of readers would appreciate. I really enjoyed being able to see them grow in the relationship. This final book found them in a difficult position, but I was satisfied with the outcome.

As with many other storylines I've read that involves memory loss, I liked seeing Frey re-establish herself into a world she'd forgotten-and all the people and relationships she'd forgotten. I think the secondary characters provided a steady flow to the story, and really enhanced Frey's character. I especially enjoyed Steed and Ruby.

This was my first "Fey" book, and needless to say, it won't be my last.

  1. This is a series I really mean to finish. I pretty much hated the first book (Frey) but bought the 2nd book at the same time as the first. However, because I rated the first one so low I never got around to reading Pieces of Eight.
It's great to know others liked these books far more than I did ... Sounds like book 3 was a vast improvement tho! I really need to give the 2nd one a fair chance to improve my opinion of this series. I liked the idea of the book, just couldn't stand the main character.
